Jigjiga University Hosts HCD’s Book Launch and Discussion on Democratization in the Horn of Africa
The Horn Center for Democracy (HCD) presented and launched its book, Democratization in the Horn of Africa: Structural Constraints, Political Dynamics, and Future Prospects, at Jigjiga University on 22 September 2026.
HCD brought its research on democratization in the Horn of Africa to Jigjiga University on 22 September 2026, where it presented and launched its book, Democratization in the Horn of Africa: Structural Constraints, Political Dynamics, and Future Prospects.
The event formed part of HCD’s broader knowledge production and dissemination strategy, which seeks to make the Center’s research accessible to academic institutions, policymakers, practitioners, young people, and other stakeholders in Ethiopia and across the Horn of Africa (HoA).
HCD’s Executive Director, Frew Demeke, and the book’s lead researcher, Dr. Dereje Feyisa, led the engagement on behalf of the Center. Dr. Dereje presented the publication and its key findings, drawing on the comparative research undertaken across the five different contexts in the HoA region. The presentation was attended by members of Jigjiga University’s academic community and senior management, who engaged with the research and reflected on its findings and their relevance to evolving political and governance realities.
As part of its commitment to sustaining access to knowledge beyond individual dissemination events, HCD welcomed Jigjiga University’s commitment to make the publication available through its library. This will provide students, researchers, faculty, and other members of the university community with continued access to the research.
The event reflects HCD’s broader approach to knowledge dissemination: connecting research with learning, public dialogue, and democratic practice, while creating opportunities for exchange and reflection on democratization and democratic governance.
This engagement with the university is part of HCD’s strategy to expand the reach and uptake of its research among students, academics, researchers, civil society actors, policymakers, young people, and other stakeholders across the region. HCD will continue to engage universities and academic communities in Ethiopia and across the Horn of Africa in the same spirit.
