YLDS Cohort I Concludes: Advancing Youth Leadership, Democratic Engagement and Regional Solidarity

On October 18, 2026 YLDS Cohort I Concludes: Advancing Youth Leadership, Democratic Engagement and Regional Solidarity

The Horn Center for Democracy (HCD) has concluded the inaugural cohort of its Youth Leadership for Democracy and Solidarity (YLDS) programme, marking the completion of a regional learning journey that brought together 14 emerging young leaders from across the Horn of Africa.

Over the course of the programme, both online and in person, participants explored democratic governance, political leadership, civic engagement, youth agency, and regional solidarity.

The closing session was not simply a moment to reflect on lessons learned, but also an opportunity for participants to articulate their individual commitments and define how they would carry the experience forward. Each participant made a personal pledge, which collectively informed a declaration expressing their shared commitment to democratic leadership, mutual support, regional solidarity, and continued engagement.

The declaration was read and signed by cohort members, formalizing their collective commitment beyond the training programme. Participants also agreed to establish a YLDS alumni network, selecting a lead and co-lead from among their peers to help sustain communication, coordination, and engagement.

Recognizing that solidarity must extend beyond words, participants exchanged social media contacts, including LinkedIn, and committed to supporting, encouraging, and amplifying one another’s work and achievements. A dedicated WhatsApp group will also serve as a continuing platform for communication, peer support, and collaboration.

As Cohort I comes to a close, these commitments mark the beginning of a continued journey-one rooted in shared responsibility, cross-border relationships, and a collective aspiration to contribute to democratic governance and regional solidarity in the Horn of Africa.
